Imagine you’ve never upgraded your computer’s operating system (OS). Your computer may run quite slowly, its programs might not work so well, and it may struggle to perform various tasks. In a way, the mental constructs of the mind that we absorb in childhood and in the early years of life, as well as the various traumas and stresses we endure, are like an operating system in our brains. This internal OS determines how we make decisions and choices and is the basis for our belief systems and our approaches to life.
Just like in a computer, whose OS is running in the background and is invisible to the human eye, our mental constructs are operating unconsciously. However, in order to upgrade our internal OS, we must begin to see the level of disorder in the mind. This requires us to become much more conscious and aware of how our internal computers are operating in our day-to-day lives.
Since our brains are like computers, processing efficiency and effectiveness are key to reducing stress and increasing joy. Neurofeedback, or brain wave training, can act as a tool to help us optimize our internal OS by assisting us to be more present, more in the moment, and less caught up in our thoughts. Because brain waves seem to be dedicated to various brain functions, training them can literally change the structure and function of the brain. Improved brain function can increase creativity and stimulate innovative abilities to solve life problems.
Neurofeedback is even more effective when combined with spiritual counseling. As we begin to see more clearly the unconscious operating system, i.e. beliefs, mental constructs, etc., we become less identified with our thoughts/feelings and, therefore, less fearful. When we are less fearful, we can respond with less reactivity and make better choices. Essentially we have increased our bandwidth so that we have a broader range for making choices that reduce disorder in our life. The effect of this is increased consciousness, allowing us to face life’s challenges with greater ease.
