Importance of Minerals

For any diet to be functional some basic needs must be met. One of these fundamental elements is that the body requires minerals. ALL minerals! And they must be in a proper ratio and proportion equal to that of the ocean. We know this because of a famous biologist named Renee Quinton who discovered in 1897 that the mineral content of the ocean was the same as the blood. He found that the consumption of a small amount of sea water collected from the middle of a plankton bloom had a profound healing effect on people’s health. What he really discovered was a substance that was in perfect mineral balance and could help create homeostasis in our internal environment. Minerals are one of the most important elements, which both feed and regulate our Nervous System, which in turn regulate all the organs and glands in the body. Without minerals we cannot properly utilize other nutrients such as vitamins, enzymes and amino acids, as well as fats and carbohydrates, which require them for activation. Essentially minerals create conductivity in the body and act as catalysts to all other metabolic functions.

Getting all the minerals we need is no longer an easy task in today’s world with the high amount of stress, processed foods, pesticides/herbicides and poor lifestyles. It has become almost impossible to achieve from just food alone. Most people are unaware that chronic long-term stress and consumption of excess sugars causes the body to wash out its storehouse of minerals from the bones, glands and organs in order to maintain homeostasis. The food additives and chemicals bind with and make many minerals unavailable in the body. Furthermore, these highly processed foods make the blood more acidic which again depletes the body of its natural balance. Another complication to this is that since the 1930’s our soils have been depleted of their mineral balance according to Senate Document 264, 1936. What this means is that most of our foods are deficient in minerals even before we get them into our body. And ANY deficiency in minerals will lead to disease.

Minerals must be acquired by food. Our bodies do not make them. Although we would hope we could get them from the foods we eat, today’s diets do not contain the minerals we need even if you are eating a pristine diet. A deficiency of a single mineral can negatively impact the entire chain of life, rendering other nutrients ineffective and useless. What about supplements? Most of them are ineffective because they are not coming in a full spectrum form or from a food form. Many are synthetic and can not be properly digested or absorbed, which lead to even further problems. All minerals work together. When you affect one it affects the other. So you can’t just take a Calcium/Magnesium supplement and expect that to meet your needs. The body does not work in terms of parts and pieces. It works as a whole. The only other way I would recommend to take minerals if you are not taking them in a whole form (as in all the minerals), is through a hair-mineral testing. When your body lacks minerals it typically creates an acidic pH balance. Our body pH is very important because pH controls the speed of our body's biochemical reactions. It does this by controlling the speed of enzyme activity as well as the speed at which electricity moves through our body. Your pH is really a sign of how your body is managing your mineral reserves and when the pH is out of balance it indicates that minerals are off.

One of the most common forms of mineral depletion is in diabetes. Lack of minerals in one of the main cause in most blood sugar related disease (diabetes, hypoglycemia) and neurological disorders. Consumption of carbohydrates i.e. sugar (in any form) if taken in excess will cause the body to start dumping minerals. It leaves the body less able to cope and eliminate toxins on a daily basis. One of the most interesting things I have found is that when people start getting the proper mineral balance they tend to stop craving sugars and sweets and they tend not to eat as much. Truthfully most people do not need to eat as much as they do. It is often from an imbalanced internal environment that we do. The more minerals we have the more stable our blood sugar. With this comes a more balanced emotional state. They appear to be calmer, more peaceful and more grounded. Ultimately what is happening is that the minerals start balancing out the pH and increase the functionality of our glands and organs.
