How the Brain Works

What causes our brain and health to be imbalanced?

How the Brain and Body get out of Balance

First we have to make something clear. In reality there is no separation between the brain and the body. What happens to the body also affects the brain and what affects the brain also affects the body. Medical science has tried to keep these two separate but it is impossible. They are totally interrelated and totally dependent upon one another.

In considering our health from this perspective we can now look at some of the fundamental elements that contribute to the loss of balance to the mind-body connection which we would call dis-ease. This imbalance can lead to everything from depression to low blood sugar and anything in between.

Basic elements that affect the brain and body:

Genetics
Poor diet / Bad Nutrition
Medication / Chemical Exposure
Environment (internal and external)
Trauma / Stress
Perceived beliefs thought to be true (curses, thoughts, ideas)
Cosmic Forces

Let’s briefly address each of these areas. All of them play a role in the overall harmony of the body yet some more so than others.

Genetics

Genetic propensity is one of the most obvious factors that affect our health. However, sometimes it takes years to identify certain genetic anomalies and now scientists are saying there are many factors that affect how the genes get turned on and off. One of the biggest areas that affect this is the physical and energetic environment we live in. As cellular biologist Bruce Lipton says, “A cell’s life is controlled by the physical and energetic environment and not by its genes. Genes are simply molecular blueprints used in the construction of cells, tissues, and organs. The environment serves as a “contractor” who reads and engages those energetic blueprints and is ultimately responsible for the character of a cell’s life. It is a single cell’s “awareness” of the environment, not its genes, that sets into motion the mechanisms of life.”

Lee Gerdes, founder of Brain State Technologies™ also states: “Most of us believe that there is nothing we can do about genetic propensity. I don’t agree. I believe we will find a way to alter that and will do so in only a few years. For now, it is what it is. However, consider this - if a number of people have similar environments and degrees of trauma in their life journey, then why don’t all of them respond with similar pathologies when the environment and trauma were similar? Because, I believe, there is a genetic propensity toward certain vulnerabilities for some of us. For instance, large numbers of people are subjected to similar mercury input and face a similar pattern of trauma, BUT a few of those people will develop mercury poisoning. Why not ALL of them? I believe the difference is genetic propensity. Yes, I know – for all of you analysts out there – we can’t be sure that the degree of trauma is the same in the above case or that the environments are exactly the same either, but for all practical purposes we can assume that genetic propensity certainly does sway the scales. This is seen even more profoundly in those soldiers returning from Iraq. Some have ridden in the same vehicle together and yet one comes home with dramatic PTSD and the other doesn’t. Why does this happen?

I think of it as one leg of a 3-legged stool.  Genetic propensity is one element in the puzzle here. Pay attention to this:  it does not mean that we can’t help those with PTSD (for example), due to their genetic propensity toward it – quite the contrary. Balance and harmonize the brain and PTSD (for example) may dramatically diminished or simply disappear altogether.

Our environment is the second leg of the stool. As humans we can alter our environment – especially if we have information that the environment we are in has consequences we did not previously understand. When I was a boy (uh-oh, now I date myself for sure) I didn’t have the information that smoking was creating an environment which had a lot of risk for diminished health of the smoker as well as those around him/her. When I had that information about the environment caused by smoking, I realized that I needed to stop – to change my environment – and I did. In the last few years I have also learned that the incredible amount of information my brain receives every day causes me undue stress. Now I take time to be quiet – especially to sit still for a time, eliminating most of the media for news, and limiting TV dramatically – this creates a more peaceful environment. And, to support myself in my environment, I also spend time listening to my body every day. If I don’t do these things, my environment will put me at risk for brain imbalance. If I don’t have regular waste elimination and/or if I don’t eat healthy food and exercise, again my environment will put me at risk. However, I can alter and control my environment. If I wish to be healthy and balanced, I will alter my environment based on the information I have.

Circumstance is the third leg of the stool, and is something we can do little about at times. If someone runs a red light and crashes into our car, BANG – we likely have just experienced trauma. There are lots of trauma possibilities, some of which seem to have little to do with our will. Any time the brain perceives (be it a correct or incorrect perception) that it’s life is being threatened, a trauma is the result. And, as traumas stack up during our life journey, one more small trauma may be the proverbial straw that breaks the camels back, and off we go into some kind of imbalance or chaos based on the neural-net which was created for the brain to protect itself. Did environment play a role in that? Possibly. Did genetic propensity play a role in that? Possibly. Certainly trauma created by circumstance was one leg of the stool which is now tipped over or leaning, but environment and/or genetic propensity can make that a lot worse.”

Poor Diet / Bad Nutrition

Because the brain and body are connected what we eat has a direct correlation with both our brain and body function. The high degree of processed foods is now presenting many health conditions that we have never seen before until recently. When we eat a diet void of the basic nutrients for life it creates a series of reactions. These reactions will affect our physical body, mind and brain.

As an example it is now been shown that Omega 3 Fatty Acids play a significant role in how our brain functions. Unless we are getting foods that have these in their natural form we have to supplement in order to obtain what the brain needs for optimal functioning.

Medication / Chemical Exposure

Medications, vaccinations, conventional foods (foods sprayed with pesticides, insecticides of used with antibiotics and hormones) are another major area that affects the health of the brain and body. Because our bodies are chemically and electrically operated any substance that affects these elements will have an effect on our overall well-being.

Environment

This is a relativity new area in terms of looking at it in relationship to our health. With the effects of industrial societies polluting our planet we are seeing first hand effects of how it is affecting the external environment around us from warming ocean temperatures to various species of animals disappearing.

If we look at what is going into our bodies we can also see that the chemicals and processed foods (bi-products of industrialized society) are equally affecting our internal environment. The fluids that regulate this environment have a very delicate balance and when it is out of balance health problems will manifest either physically or psychologically.

One of the most fundamental elements that is out of balance are the minerals in our body. Our soils have been depleted of minerals since the 1920’s. Now most foods have been sprayed with insecticides, pesticides and tainted from genetically modified foods. This of course leaves our bodies with less of the most precious substance our bodies need – minerals. Minerals are one of the main foods that feed the nervous system which is the link between the brain and the body.

There is another environment we are not as often aware which is the “energetic” environment we live in which consists of the people, relationships and family we spend time around. Elizabeth Gould, a professor of psychology at Princeton University found that the structure of our brain is incredibly influenced by our surroundings such as people from our family, work and friends. Put a primate under stressful conditions, and the brain begins to starve. It stops creating new cells. The cells it already has retreat inward. In chronic periods of stress her team has found that the production of neurons stops. This environment also applies to food too. Food that has been cooked or processed excessively is “dead energetically”. Some pioneers in the field of psychology such as Dr. Bernard Bail have found that even the way a married couple gets along while a child is in the womb has a significant effect on the overall health and well being of the baby.

Trauma / Stress

Of all the areas that affect our brain and health I feel that this one is one of the most important. Why? Both Dr. Robert Scaer and Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer both separately have shown how trauma affects the brain. Dr. Scaer believes, “…all physical manifestations of disease is the result of an event that our physical organism perceives as trauma, … and that it is recorded by our brain as a trauma imprint.” Dr. Hamer, would describe this trauma (or anytime we are caught on the wrong foot) as a biological conflict that manifests as a physical transformation in the brain which leads to a measurable transformation of the nervous system. The outcome of traumas affects all aspects of our life. According to Peter Levine, Ph.D, “the cumulative experiences of life’s ‘little traumas’ shape virtually every single part of our existence. This accumulation of negative life experiences molds one’s personality, choices of mate, profession, clothes, appetite, pet peeves, social behaviors, posture, and, most specifically, our state of physical and mental health and disease.” So when it comes to looking at the health and well being of an individual trauma is the most important element to consider.

Also worth mentioning is the work of Dr. David Berceli. Dr. Berceli discovered a fundamental approach to assist people through specific exercises to help them move through traumatic events and how it is directly connected to the brain and body.

It has also been well proven and documented that long term stress or trauma weakens the body. It has been shown via the ACE Study (Adverse Childhood Experiences) "http://www.acestudy.org/files/OriginsofAddiction.pdf" how traumatic childhood experiences significantly affect the overall health and behavioral outcomes of a person in their later life. According the Center for Disease Control (CDC) 85% of all illnesses have an emotional component.

Each one of us handles trauma/stress differently. Most of us are familiar with going into a fight/flight response. If we stay in this phase to long we find that the following happens

Increase in:
Blood Pressure
Heart Rate
Fuel Availability (sugar, fats…)
Adrenaline
Oxygen circulation to vital organs
Blood clotting (minimizes loss of blood if wounded)
Decreases:
Fuel Storage (decreased insulin activity to store glucose for example)
Digestion
Salivation
Sexual Response

The symptoms of illnesses associated with fight/flight response state dominance include: Hypertension, Hypercholesterolemia, fast arrhythmias, heart disease, type 1 diabetes, anxiety, panic attacks, hyper vigilance, poor sleep

Another way we handle trauma/stress is through the freeze response which presents in the following ways:

Decreases:
Heart Rate
Blood Pressure
Temperature
Muscle Tension
Increases:
Fuel Storage (increased insulin activity) – reduces the immune system
Levels of endorphins – creates mind numbing affect and impairs memory access and storage

The symptoms and illnesses associated with freeze state dominance include:
Depression, Weight gain, Dizziness and light headedness, Low Blood Pressure, Low Heart Rate, Fatigue, Diarrhea…
May also include asthma, autism, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, Diabetes type II and Alzheimer’s.

All of the above symptoms are just indicators that the body has lost its sense of balance either in the brain or body. As a brain gets more balanced many of these symptoms naturally disappear. Some of the most common symptoms of diseases noticed to improvement after doing Brain State Conditioning are include:

Depression
Anxiety
Sleep problems
Pain
Learning difficulties
Reactivity
Addictions

Perceived beliefs thought to be true (curses, thoughts, ideas)

From the time we are in the womb until about age 6 the unconscious mind is absorbing everything around it which helps to start forming our beliefs and ideas of life. Unfortunately at that age we cannot discern which things the environmental stimuli provides for us are good or bad or right or wrong. We just perceive it as it is. This then becomes hard-wired into our way of being and thinking which become our habits.

Dr. Maxwell Multz once said, “The human brain and nervous system are incapable of determining the difference between an actual experience and one imagined in detail.” I will never forget reading this statement. It meant that we cannot discern the difference between what we believe to be true and the real truth. Essentially, our perceptions and beliefs control our behavior. The organism reads the environment and organizes its biology to meet the demands. Some studies were done by Dr. Korotkov in Russia using a camera based on kirlian photography. The study was done to see what the difference would be between woman had breast cancer and women who thought they had breast cancer. What they found was shocking that the energetic pictures looked exactly the same. Our thoughts are very powerful whether they be thoughts of being cursed, illness or love. Our thoughts select our emotions, our emotions regulate our chemistry and our chemistry determines our physiology.

As you can now see our perceptions and belief s can have a powerful affect on our physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

Cosmic Forces

This could be any of the energies from outside of us that affect us. It is clear for example that the Sun and Moon play a role in our overall health. Without the natural light of the Sun people can experience depression and become low in Vitamin D which supports the immune system. The Moon often plays a role in our mood as well as in a woman’s menses. It this is the case then it is also possible that the other planets play a role in our lives in some unseen manor as well. Personally, as a medical astrologer who looks at charts from the perspective of people’s heath, I have found this to be true time and time again.

Summary

The beauty about Brain State Conditioning is that we are able to go beyond the conscious mind and into working with the unconscious where a lot of the various patterns and habits which have created static and noise has derived from in our life. Static and noise could be defined as anything which causes us to self medicate. This could be anything from drugs to smoking to over working to sex.
