This is not typically considered a food but for good brain function one should think of exercise as important as one’s need for food. Without regular exercise both the body and brain suffer. Through exercise we increase the delivery of nutrition to the brain. This brings more blood flow and oxygen which increases energy. This then affects our cognitive abilities such as memory, focus and paying attention. Exercise also causes a release of various biochemicals such as endorphins which cause us to be in a more joyful state. In fact, exercise is one of the best things a person can do if they are experiencing depression. Current research now shows that often times exercise is even more effective than medication in cases of moderate depression. Not enough can be said about the importance of exercise and a ‘happy’ brain!
